Re: Whatcha listening to?

Frank should have made it more clear that he cut and pasted those reviews wholesale either from a website called http://www.robertchristgau.com, or a google copy of a book called Rock Albums of the 70's, A Critical Guide from the same author. He adds Robert Christgau's name at the bottom of his post...

Re: Whatcha listening to?

Imagine Geddy Lee outside of Rush, or even better, Ozzy singing in a band other than Sabbath. I don't mean the polished, tone corrected, clean-and-sober Oz of Blizzard/Bark at the Moon fame; I mean the dazed, half drunk, stammering, WAY out of tune Ozzy that MADE Black Sabbath's career! Something ab...

Re: THE UNBELIEVERS

>>Science cannot make you love.<<

The hell it can't. It can make you fall in love with the entire universe.

Frank, my thread, my rules: ARE YOU GOING TO SEE THIS when it comes out, yes or no?

Re: THE UNBELIEVERS

Frank, I disagree with what you wrote about Richard Dawkins. Religion has a LONG history of interjecting itself into scientific questions, including subjecting people to torture and death for advocating scientific findings that turned out to be true. This continues in some of the more fundamentalist...

THE UNBELIEVERS

THE UNBELIEVERS is a documentary starring Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxDLkoK8vQQ It brings up the age old question that in my opinion doesn't have a general answer: the question of ACCOMMODATIONISM. I admire the scientific accomplishments of both men, but I'...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

OSC is an anomaly. I met him in person; heck, I took his writing seminar back in the day. I'm even acquainted with one of his kids (a gifted actress, by the way). And it's odd: the same guy who wrote that piece Rick is referring to is also a close friend of Janis Ian. And he's written some wonderful...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Be yourself, but be your best self. I don't know who first said the above, but it's a golden rule to live by. It can be a difficult standard to hold oneself to, but it can be done, with practice. A little story about Yours Truly. A few decades ago, I was a young post adolescent of 21 or so, fresh o...

Re: Whatcha reading?

Frank, read the book. It's all there.

Steve, it's amazing to me that we are undergoing more social and societal evolution (if you will) in our LIFETIMES than our whole species has in the previous 50,000 years. I think that's what's melting my mind right now. (For the good.)

Re: Whatcha reading?

This book may require a topic thread all it's own: I just finished THE BETTER ANGELS OF OUR NATURE: Why Violence Has Declined, by Steven Pinker. I have not been this spun around since Carl Sagan's book COSMIC CONNECTION brought me as a young teen to question my religious faith. (Or at least what oth...

Welcome back, Ez! That's what's lovely about our group here. Sometimes we go away for a bit, but then we come back to open arms.

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Jack London and Farley Mowat were my introduction to Canada. I haven't looked south since!

(Of course, until I learned better, everything north of the 49th parallel was perpetually frozen in eternal winter....)

Re: AGAIN!!

That happened to me once, and that was more than enough. I'd consider talking with someone at their security department about any extra steps you could take to protect yourself.
