Re: MadCon

Harlan ended up going to Old Country Buffet (OCB) for dinner on Friday and had an incident there that he kept referencing throughout the Con but never seemed to address until the final day. On Friday and on Saturday he would begin to tell the story about making a child cry at OCB but somehow never s...

Re: MadCon

Yeah, I figured the asides might be, but I wanted to give you at least a flavor of what Harlan was like telling this story live. If anything is particularly confusing to you or anyone else, let me know. While the Gopher story is covered by Deep Shag, the Zandor story was a new one to me. I am very g...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Personally, I find the assertion of "commonsense" conservatives really grating. There is an anti-intellectualism embedded in Palin's philosophy that really gnaws at me, as if the "smart" people don't understand the needs of the "common" folks. Echoes of "A Canticle...

Re: MadCon

Let me start with the Zandor tale, remembering that I can, in no way convey how truly funny this is when Harlan tells it, because of his mannerisms, his sidebars, and knowledge of the subject. Nevertheless....has everyone read the story of Harlan mailing a dead gopher to the Comptroller of a publish...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

I feel very conflicted about this Wikileaks situation. On the one hand, some information, such as the government intentionally depressing the number of Iraqi civilian deaths and obscene levels of corruption in the Afghan government are useful to have out there. Others, such as private correspondence...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Wait, is that the wind whispering in my ear or the voices in my head? So damn hard to tell the difference sometimes, but I do wonder what the wind would need with a vat of crisco oil, 3 midgets, a goat, and a crossbow (although Lori might have some ideas on that)

Re: MadCon

Ok, got my kids this weekend and need some time to reconstruct everything. I will work on this on Monday (need something to keep me busy at work). If Keeney does not pop on on this thread, I will ask him to contribute if I see him this week. Peggy, Doug, Keith, Barney & Sara, etc. all had great ...

Re: MadCon

So, where should we start: the Zandor story? Harlan just going after a teenage kid in the audience? Would someon who was there like to describe the incident at the Old Country Buffet?

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Barber, I agree with you about North Korea serving as a buffer between China and South Korea as well as being a bargainign chip to use with the US, but I do not agree that Kim is reliable, even for the Chinese. His regime is brutal, and performs the function that China desires very well, but he is s...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

If memory serves, this was the thread where there was some significant discussion on Net Neutrality. HuffPost has a good article up now about Comcast getting busted for trying to really putting the squeeze on some of its content, specifically Netflix: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/timothy-karr/comca...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Barber, One aspect of the North Korean situation that puzzles me is China lack of involvement. North Korea is almost totally dependent on China for imports and for a direct tie to most industrialized nations, yet they have not taken steps to curb North Korea. Now to a certain extent I can udnerstand...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Steve in the case of Bush & Kerry, it is a classic Rove strategy, you don't attack your opponents' weakness, you attack their strength. If you are successful, the weaknesses become even more apparent. It is a gamble because if you lose, you lose big, but it can be effective when one side is not ...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Rob, I cannot say that I watch Olbermann regularly, but have watched him on an intermittent basis. I do not deny his eloquence or his intelligence but when listening to him a get a sense of smug condescencion the likes of which I have only seen in that equally insufferable prick O'Reilly. Olbermann ...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Rob, As I have said earlier, I generally agree with Olbermann politically, but I find his style grating. I much prefer Rachel Maddow who, while equally liberal, does not come across as antagonistic and is just as smart as Keith. This may sound odd, but when discussing evil like Beck or Limbaugh (and...
