Here's an irony. According to Ha-joon Chang, if the USSR didn't build up its collective industrial base it would not have had the power to beat back the nazis. Stalin did take Hitler's place, but that's another story. sigh.

BUT

Had Stalin not decimated the Bolshevik party, and not instructed Europe's communist parties to work WITH Europe's fascist parties to undermine Liberal Democracy, possibly (only possibly) Hitler might not have come to power in the first place.

We can only speculate.

And whatever advantage he might have gained from industrializing so quickly, he thoroughly undid with his purgings of the Red Army.

i decided this morn to return to the local rags on a daily basis.
since getting online 11/07, i got stuck on the nyt, the wp, guard. (heeding the praise sung to them) and returned to regularly scanning the wsj (depending on the environ, being seen with the wsj can be a... social hazard).

so...
