They are ready to cut both Social Security and Medicare, but not touch tax cuts. It's the capitalist experiment that is failing.

My other point was that anarchists were purged by our government. You don't purge people who you think don't make sense. The point is that you go after people who might actually have an alternative that they do not want.

I rather thought that Catalonia was an indictment of Stalinism and its socialist stooges who fought the anarchists much harder than they thought the fascists. . .

Absolutely. Sorry if I gave the impression that Orwell was attacking the anarchists. I was just using his experience as an example of why I don't think anarchism will work.

But as I said, a beautiful dream. I just need practical details.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War (which ain't over folks whatever they tell you). The Library of Congress has made available on Flickr a series of stereographs produced during the war. Apparently the stereo photograph technology was developed shortly before the war. They've also converted many of these images into digital anaglyphs so whip out a pair of those funny looking red and green eyeglasses and scroll down on the page at the link and check them out.

That was Chomsky's favorite Orwell book so I knew he couldn't be bashing the anarchists..lol

Anarchism is pretty simple: you run your own life.

Look at this powerful ad from the Brady Campaign:

Even Ted Nugent would throw his glock away after seeing that ad. Now that's framing.

I just saw this video: A lady is asked who she will vote for, she says she will probably vote for Obama, because she doesn't care for Hillary Clinton. When asked what Clinton policy she didn't like, she said, "I don't know any of her policies."

We are so screwed.

Fact of the day:

Both parties charge Committee members fees for their leadership bump up. To be the head of a committee you have to insure you will get a certain amount of campaign cash for the party. The Republicans started this under Gingrich, the democrats came later. Thank Clinton.

Both parties have gone right because of this monetary reality. Nancy Pelosi alone has to give the party at least 800,000 dollars to keep her position.

They are crooks, folks. We have to get money from politics, but will they budge? Follow the money.

Frank, I applaud the citing of sources -- where did Thomas Fergason publish this?

Hurrah for Chris Hedges! He nails it exactly. I only wish this were printed in a mainstreme publication so the people who really need to see it would get to see it.

High fives Steve Evil. Hedges is one of our top radical social critics--he nails it because he has a big hammer.

Ezra is jealous. waa waa

Frankieee..........WTF?

Stick stick beat pig!

"mainstream" little of that old edumacatione.

And a couple posts up,, you make it sound like Chris Hedges teaches kids to be corporate drones.. opposite of what you meant? More care in the writing Frank please. We are worthy of your time and your best effort.

To your post about kids picking their own reading material .... What I have observed in my time in classrooms is that elementary and high school students, if left to their own devices, will pick their noses. 90%. And if you don't stop them, they will eat it. Seriously, kids will not voluntarily read good material. Not most of them. They will read junk mags and pokemon books. Books about Hanna Montana and Power Rangers. Which have their place as entertainment. But if you want this informed, intelligent society, we need them to read more. And on their own, most won't. In my personal experience and that of my teachers and my friends who are teachers. It is good to have beautiful dreams, Frank and you do. But it is good to lay the foundation for making them come true.

Diane, hehe, I did write that a bit fast. Chris Hedges wrote what THEY did. Better?

Alfie Kohn says that there are several studies that prove that kids who pick out their own books become better readers. He is a major education expert and he looks for the studies. I trust him.

Elitists bow to the betters.
