Barber, will you please email Chomsky. I want to see what he says to your queries, on copyrights and the tech stuff. It would be fun.

Why should I? If I were to chase everyone who misrepresents the record I'd be unemployed in a heartbeat.

To defend my mentor he was actually at the lab at MIT when all this was done. He talked to the scientists, was actually friends with them. He investigates this stuff.

I'm done.

I emailed Dr Chomsky and he told me to tell Frank

Don't make me come down out of my ivory tower and kick yo ass!

I watched the video of Chomsky again and he doesn't use the term "fully funded." He uses the term funded, not fully.

The internet was funded by government money and research, Chomsky's only point, then givin away free to industry.

His critique of how we kept out Japanese super-computers is the most important part of the rant.

Shame on you Steven.

No, who?

Frank the way your mind flits about it took me a bit to figure out what you were talking about here but I finally grokked. The expression "ivory tower" has nothing in particular to do with personal wealth. The usual definition is A state of sheltered and unworldly intellectual isolation. I was tweaking Prof Chomsky for his pontificating not because I thought he was rich and that this was a bad thing that invalidated his comments. That's your trip.

Yeah I bet Prof Dawkins is loaded. Two million copies! But I suspect what chaps the collective ass of his detractors is not WHAT he says (which after all by his own admission is not terribly different from what atheists have been saying ever since we stopped being burned at the stake), but the fact that somebody is listening to what he says. Dawkins started a conversation that needed to be had.

And he made a bundle doing it. So what? A workman is worthy of his hire, as the Good Book says. Would you begrudge HE big bucks if he had a NYTs bestseller? Would financial success cheapen his work? Get real Frank. There's nothing wrong with a good paycheck if it's earned honestly and concientiously.

Damned if I know: I'm on vacation. It looks like the chavs are indulging in their Appetite For Destruction again, but it would not surprise me either if the media was distorting the situation again. It has to be said though: they are burning down their own neighbourhoods. If they think that will achieve anything, well good luck to them.

I saw an Alfie Kohn speech and he said something quite controversial. He said that you should not punish kids for bad spelling or grammar, that it is more important to learn editing, reading and writing and kids will learn grammar from trial and error themselves.

He says there are studies that prove this. Something to ponder.

Sam, be afraid, be very afraid. Frank thinks he luvs u.

Frank, as a teacher, I must disagree. The last kid I taught who used their when he meant there, I stuck bamboo shoots under all ten fingernails, wrapped wire around his ankles, and strung him up by them. Then I beat him with a wooden paddle. That'll learn the little varmints. And if Alfie has a problem with my methods, let him come see me. I got some studies for him. Oh yeah.
