Nice article, Mark. Made me consider brushing off some of the older books on the shelf (once I get past my roommate and her dog, that is.)

Couple of notes: I have not read Gerrold's Yesterday's Children, but am intrigued by your mention of Run Silent, Run Deep. Ned Beach (Captain Edward L. Beach) was a very good friend of my father for most of their careers. I rather think Dad considered him a mentor as well as a peer. I'm barely familiar enough with the Star Wolf series -- never read them -- that I can see the parallels and wonder if Gerrorld ever noted them, and if Ned ever recognized them from his end (sadly, he passed a decade ago, so we'll never know).

I think I need to pick that one up.

On a separate note, have read any of World's Collider? Intriguing concept, very well executed.

- I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

Diane, thanks for the note, I'm fine.
Just thinking too much and scribbling and bibbling lately.
Looking forward to the weekend, goodbye slave job for two days!

The release of the West Memphis 3 was easily one of the biggest stories of the year. Without looking, did our Mark mention this?

I attempted Run Silent Run Deep, but got hung up on the technical details.

One of the posters on the blog mentioned Patrick O'Brian - I have to say I agree completely. Master and Commander was indeed a slog, but the series improved dramatically afterwards. . .

This is completely self-indulgent, but I do include a piece about Harlan in the line-up.
