To put it succinctly: I enjoyed Austin while I was there, but will admit that El Paso left me colder than, well, a Halloween euphemism I'll let you all conjure in your minds rather than here on the page.
British Columbia is a whole other world, however, and simply cannot be compared to Texas in any logical sense. They are far too different both in landscape and in mindset. BC wins hands-down for the stunning visuals. Every corner is another gobsmacking vista that reduces mankind to our proper role in the world. And the people are equally lovely.
There. I've said it. Texans will tell me I'm unAmerican, but there it is.
On the other hand I HAVE been talking to a number of locals about the possibility of Ecotopia, or Pacifica or whatever is the popular name of a new West Coast republic stretching from BC to San Diego. I think they're up for the idea.
Just sayin.
