Ten Years On

Postby Ezra Lb. » Mon Sep 01, 2014 10:24 pm

There are several notable anniversaries on September 1st. The official start of World War II, and the last known passenger pigeon died on this day in a Cincinnati museum in 1914. It’s not quite as momentous as all that but today is also the tenth anniversary of my first post on this site. Ten years! Not an insignificant length of time to do anything.

It was interesting to go back today and read the oldest posts I could find and see me pontificating about the liabilities of religious belief and to read Jan admonishing Frank for his sentence fragment drive-by shooting style. Plus ça change… Originally I had no intention this being a long term thing, hence the awful pun name. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting several of the regular posters here and over in the Pavilion and I look forward to the opportunity to meet more of you.

We seem to have reached a kind of impasse on this forum. I not sure if anyone is really sure of the best way forward. Or even if this place serves a function anymore. Perhaps this will turn out to be a kind of “mid-life crisis” and we will carry on somehow, or maybe it’s time to wind this sucker down. I don’t know. But here are my plans for the immediate future.

If you are one of the regular posters here or in the Pavilion and are known to me I will provide my real name and a personal email address if you contact me privately.

Some of the arguments that take place here have run out of gas and are basically spinning in circles. I’m guilty too. In the absence of any new or fresh perspectives I’m going to cut back a bit on the religious and political arguments for a time. That doesn’t mean I won’t post or comment it’ll just have to be something worth the effort.

What I am going to do is post more reviews. Like everyone else here I have some itches I want to scratch and I’ve read some interesting books lately that I would like to respond to even if it’s only working it out in my own head. Also there‘re a couple mini-essays I’ve been threatening. I don’t know if I will have anything interesting to say but then you can be the judge of that.

Ten years. Dang.

I look forward to your musings, Ezra. And I think it's a clever nom de keyboard.

Ezra - the time in here does creep, doesn't it? But your assessment is a fair. I look forward to your reviews!

Not really.

Oh - phew! I thought Elliot Sterns had dug his way out of that grave and was coming back to exact his revenge on the five of us who--

What? Do I have a boogie?

I can't even remember when I signed on. I think I passed the ten year mark some time ago (I know I could my profile, but I'm not right there at the moment). The place was and is a treasure trove: I found I could write about almost any topic, and find a ready, or at least patient audience. If I haven't posted a whole lot lately it's because most of what I'd care to say is usually much more elegantly stated much earlier on by someone else.
