FOR STEVE SWANSON --- TROMPE L'OEIL,, ETC.

You happen to be squarely in my vocabularial wheelhouse.

When the Dillons did the cover painting for THE ESSENTIAL ELLISON, they used the same m.o. as Archimboldo; i.e., a style that makes one large picture out of a mass of smaller pictures.
If you look at THE ESSENTIAL you'll clearly see the exquisite trickery. It is called "cyptesthesia."

That is one name for the optical illusion; at least, one TYPE of o.i. Strictly speaking, you're dealing--in large--with that kind of illusory art called "anamorphosis."

Anamorphism, aka anamorphic perspective, goes at least as far back as da Vinci, reached something of a faddish apex in Holbein the Younger's "The Ambassadors," and kaleidoscopically (sp?) altered in a hundred different ways, from Magritte and Dali even to the gestalt psychologist Rubin's well-known "Hidden Faces and Goblet." You know that one; everybody does.

As for an exact word for the purposive mis- or trans-reading of a word--as in this case, "dreams," malapropism isn't what you're after, neither is multi-tasking. I've used this idiom in many a story-title: "Jeffty is Five," "Shattered Like a Glass Goblin," "Objects of Desire in the Mirror are Closer than They seem," et al. But that's not quite what you seek, either, it seems to me. I will have to root about in my many at-hand texts anent grammatical and syntactical jabberwocky. If I get the time, I'll do so and get back to you. Do not hold your breath.

You can purchase a Yacek Yerka poster of DREAMS WITH SHARP TEETH from us, right here. It's Susan's bailiwick, but she'll see this post sometime today, and will fill you in on cost, tube, whatever.

Totally forgot why I came here in the first place. Got distracted by Swanson.

I wanted to give a special, amazed, shout out of accolade to our Mystical Webmaster, the nonpareil Rick Wyatt, who...

Found Jeff Hardin for me!!!!!

In case y'all have been wondering who this Jeffrey Hardin is, and why I have been so hysterical about finding him...well...Jeff Hardin is the artist, age 32, who did the cover painting and 3 interiors for A FISH HEAD IN ASPIC.

Now we, Me and Subterranean Press, can pay him and use the work.

RICK ROCKS, no chaser!

Hi, Harlan and Susan and all,

I am on my way to my first class, after I dust off my old and rusty brain, and charge it. I just have one quick question. Yes, Frank, Rob has a heart, but who's is it under the bed I wonder? L&K, Diane. OH and welcome to the new Adam. D.B
