Having finished off "Farscape", we've moved on to "Slings And Arrows" on DVD - Canadian series from circa 2003 with three short seasons (6 episodes each), set at a Shakespearean festival. Starred Paul Gross (probably most widely known in the states for his lead in "Due South" on CBS) and a number of others. Quirky fun.

DC Filmfest started last weekend. Always a few excellent documentaries in the mix. Sunday afternoon saw a French made expose of Scientology. Wow, not just gullible movie stars but extortion, suicides, Moonie type mind-fucking, real seriously evil shit. All protected by our First Amendment. :(

Happily the French government does not recognize it as a protected religion and is at long last prosecuting the hell out of them.

Happily the French don't have free speech? Ezra, you worry me.

Proud to live in a country where even the Westboro Baptists have their freedom. Do I want to knife every one of those suckers? Sure, but fantasy is just that.

We are saved from Sharia law. At least you have that.

Frank you goofball you missed the point.

In these United States Scientology is classifed as a religion and enjoys the usual constitutional protections which makes it hard to prosecute when it does criminal activities (in the same way the Catholic Church mostly gets away with the child abuse).

In France it is not legally classified as as religion so it is liable for lawsuits and prosecution.

Free speech doesn't have a damn thing to do with it.

If there are actual crimes going on with Scientology they could sue them. People are afraid to because they have such good lawyers.

The first Amendment does protect Islam, even though some Islamists want to kill us. In the end freedom protects us in the end.

Should finish up Galactica this weekend and trying to decide what should be next.

Anybody watch the show Bones with David Boreanaz?
Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristrocratic forms. No gov't in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, gov't tends more and mroe to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class

I've caught Bones now and again in rerun on TNT - the requisite quirky, socially awkward scientific characters, reasonable humor, some good dramatic flourishes - what I've seen has been fun.

Yesterday I caught Coraline on the HBO preview weekend. What an absolutely charming film. It left me with a sense of wonder, even though for some odd reason not a desire to see it again.

Highly recommended for the kid in you.
