Ah, guys, fabric is an allegory, it doesn't mean flag, actual cloth or the fine papyrus of our constitution, it is the common cloth of our uninspired populace and their lowbrow view of the purple plains and Mom's apple pie that tastes like monkey boogers.

I'm having fun with the language. Calm down my friends.

I understand both Lori and Roc's viewpoints above. As a society we are much more progressive in our permission for people to speak their minds without fear of governmental response (though there are more than a few initiatives to restrict such things).

BUT -- and this is where the folks in the Tea Party and Ms Palin in particular need to re-examine their understanding of the Constitution -- free speech is still governed by responsibility for the consequences. Yes, people get beaten up (and worse) for being gay. For being black. For being different from the "crowd". For not being Christian (or just not Christian enough).

So we do have a strong tradition of freedom to be and say what we want -- but there is also an unfortunate subset of society who themselves are so lacking in control that they're unable to swallow their fears and let others thrive. These people speak with their prejudices and fists and are, when you get down to it, an embarrassing and dangerous element in an otherwise progressive society.

Thank the 60s.

Not the hippies but the rabble behind the scenes.

Obama's poll numbers are diving down--why? I have this feeling that Americans are common sense about Egypt: They think the people deserve a free society and Obama should be tougher and call for the regime to go away.

The Republicans don't get help on this issue since they are even worse.

Norman Solomon may run for Congress in CA in 2012. Support him people.

AOL just aquired Huffingtonpost. At the event they had for it AOL said they were the "anti-Corporation" right now. Nobody gave Harlan that memo.

SFX magazine had a kind of running joke that Harlan would sue someone within 1 years time. I think he may have actually held off making their prediction somewhat inaccurate.

I'll need to check my old issues to confirm the time frame. :D

Cos he could still sue the Hufington Post. Or suchlike.

Welcome back Iain.

Looks like the Neo-Cons are having a beef with Glenn Beck:

Glenn Beck makes a lot of sense.

heh heh heh

Love the blackboards. They make him look so intellectual.

Wouldn't it be funny if Beck was totally insane and nobody noticed because his point of view is validated by his success?

It really must chap the ass of people like Kristol to have the conservative movment born again wild-eyed and frothing.

Ez, IF Beck is insane? The question should not be is this guy insane, but rather how large of a meltdown will he have publicly?

I repeat an earlier assertion, the Tea Party will split from the Republicans by 2014, 2016 at the latest. You cannot tell me that Dick Luger or Olympia Snowe have anything in common with Michelle Bachman or her ilk. Funny thing is, Bachman is now taking swipes at Rick "homosexuality = bestiality" Santorum. The infighting will tear that political group in two
Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristrocratic forms. No gov't in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, gov't tends more and mroe to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class

Side note: more Unca Harlan on Youtube - a very short segment from a Canadian bookshow, circa - oh - 90 or some such date. About four and a half minutes in:

That's got to be the coolest tie I have ever seen.
